Studies Show Increased NEC Risk for Preemies Fed Baby Formula

Studies compared NEC incidence rates in pre-term infants exclusively fed human breast milk vs. cow's milk-based formulas. They found that formula-fed preemies are 6-10x more likely to develop NEC. Another study found that more than 11% of preemies fed formula exclusively made for pre-term infants developed NEC. Comparatively, preemies that received human milk more than 98% showed NEC incidence rates of 1.3%.

Necrotizing Enterocolitis Symptoms & Diagnosis

When infants have necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), it means their intestines can't hold waste products anymore. Doctors look for the following signs and symptoms when diagnosing babies with necrotizing enterocolitis:

  • Difficulty feeding
  • Constipation
  • Slowed-down heart rate
  • Belly appears swollen, red, or tender to the touch
  • Pauses in breathing (i.e., apnea)
  • Lethargy/sluggishness compared to usual activity levels
  • Food not moving through the digestive tract as expected
  • Lower than expected or unstable body temperature

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that premature infants should not be fed cow's milk because of the risk of NEC. However, manufacturers did not provide warnings to doctors that their products increased the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis in premature infants. They failed to provide physicians with guidance on the risk of NEC which prevented doctors from determining whether a safer alternative should be used.
